So it seems as if everyone these days have a profile on Myspace, Facebook or Twitter. There are also tons of other social networking sites, but these two are the most popular, so I stay with them.
I saw an ad the other day at the Hooters restaurant saying, "Follow us on Facebook and Twitter." I thought to myself, "who follows the restaurant in the first place? Is so important that I keep up with how delicious the chicken wings are?".
It's a bit ridiculous how these social networking sites are being used. The sad thing is that many people turn MySpace or Facebook page in his own little personal promotion, and this is where the biggest screams narcissism.
I imagine that you need to put your best face .. people put up their MySpace pages so that advances in the way they should be considered. Here you put your best photos, most videos, anything that projects the image that people need to see.
The problem comes when people begin to change reality to fantasy. It's OK to show pictures or comments from the true friends or events. But when you start playing a guy who is less than 90% of you, then it becomes more of an exploitation or trick. Why the number 90%? Well, I give 10% as a buffer because most people like to exaggerate the truth a bit. Try asking someone how older people are or how much they weigh;)
What about Twitter, then? Do I need to know if my partner blew his nose now? Or what your thoughts are on the taco you ate? Positive Twitter can be a useful device for celebrities, with a large fan base or businesses who need to stay in touch. But when Joe Schmoe makes use of Twitter to tell the world about their common behavior every day, then it can be a waste of bandwidth net base. It is not his blunder, however, only those people who choose to "follow" Joe Schmoe tweets.
So there you have it. Twitter can be used or abused, but I will not talk to those who use it. It is a free service and a free world, anyone can choose to follow a tweet or twit who tweets. Go for it!
As for MySpace, Facebook and the rest .. I say the only problem with it is the abuse of people living in a fantasy world and use it to anger people in the real world. Like those fake profiles and deceive others. That to me is the rarest. What's going on in the minds of people who do this? Do not they understand how weird / strange / scary to be like this? I mean, get a life, a real life! Accept what you are and be happy! Get the most out of your real life, not try to pretend to have another!
To make use of social networking sites to maintain contact with colleagues is fine. It can even be used for promotional purposes for businesses too. And if you're an actor / model / musician, then by all means encouraged. do not be promoted if there is nothing to promote. By this I mean not promoted to be anything less than what you really are .. be real. Maybe you should not be 100% truthful about everything, but let's objectives for more than 90%;)
All these social networking sites are useful for them. Whenever we all try our best to be honest, should have no problem with using these sites for any company wanting.
